What Is Molarity?

Molarity (also known as molar concentration or amount concentration, symbolized by M) is a standard measure of the concentration of a chemical species, specifically a solute, in a solution. It is defined as the number of moles of solute per liter of total final solution volume.

In quantitative analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical engineering, molarity provides a direct bridge between a measurable liquid volume and the exact stoichiometric number of molecules or ions participating in a chemical reaction. One molar (1 M) corresponds to exactly 1 mole of solute ($6.02214076 \times 10^{23}$ elementary entities) dissolved in a total solution volume of 1 liter (1 L).

Molarity Formula & Variables

The fundamental equation used by the Molarity Calculator to relate molar concentration, amount of substance, and volume is:

M = n / V
  • M = Molarity (molar concentration) in moles per liter (mol/L or M).
  • n = Amount of solute in moles (mol). When starting from mass, $n = m / Mr$.
  • V = Total final volume of the solution in liters (L).
  • m = Mass of the solute in grams (g).
  • Mr = Molar mass (molecular weight) of the solute in grams per mole (g/mol).

Molarity vs. Molality: Key Differences

Although their names look similar, molarity (M) and molality (m or b) are distinct concentration units and are not interchangeable. Molarity depends on the total volume of the solution, whereas molality depends on the mass of the solvent.

Property Molarity (M) Molality (mol/kg)
Definition Moles of solute per 1 liter of total solution Moles of solute per 1 kilogram of pure solvent
Formula M = n / Vsolution (L) b = n / msolvent (kg)
Standard Unit mol/L (or M) mol/kg (or m)
Temperature Sensitivity Changes slightly with temperature due to thermal expansion or contraction of liquid volume. Independent of temperature because mass does not change with thermal expansion.
Primary Application Volumetric titrations, aqueous lab solutions, stoichiometry, and dilutions. Colligative properties (boiling point elevation, freezing point depression) and thermodynamics.

Example 1 • Molarity from Moles

Calculating Molarity from Moles and Volume

A chemist dissolves 0.5 mol of potassium nitrate in water to make a final solution volume of 2 L. What is the molarity of the solution?

Formula: M = n / V
M = 0.5 mol / 2 L
Result: M = 0.25 M (250 mM)
Example 2 • Molarity from Mass

Preparing NaCl Solution from Grams

Suppose 5.844 g of sodium chloride (NaCl, molar mass = 58.44 g/mol) is dissolved in water to a final volume of 0.5 L (500 mL). Find the moles and molarity.

n = 5.844 g / 58.44 g/mol = 0.1 mol
M = 0.1 mol / 0.5 L
Result: M = 0.2 M (200 mM)
Example 3 • Solution Dilution

Diluting a Stock Solution (M₁V₁ = M₂V₂)

You take 50 mL of a 2 M stock solution and dilute it with solvent until the final volume reaches 200 mL. What is the final concentration (M₂)?

M₂ = (M₁ × V₁) / V₂
M₂ = (2 M × 0.05 L) / 0.2 L
Result: M₂ = 0.5 M (Dilution Factor = 4×)

Molarity Calculator FAQ

Clear answers to common questions about molar concentration, stoichiometry, and unit conversions.

A molarity calculator is an interactive chemistry calculation tool designed to compute solution molarity (M), solute amount in moles (n), required solution volume (V), concentration from solid mass and molar mass, and stock solution dilutions. It eliminates manual unit conversion errors by automatically normalizing milligrams, grams, milliliters, microliters, and millimolar values into standard SI base units before applying stoichiometric equations.

To calculate molarity, divide the number of moles of solute (n) by the total final volume of the solution in liters (V) using the equation M = n / V. If your volume is measured in milliliters (mL), divide the milliliter value by 1,000 to convert it into liters first. For example, 0.5 moles dissolved in 2 L yields a molarity of 0.25 M.

You can calculate the number of moles by multiplying the molarity of the solution (in mol/L) by the volume of the solution (in liters): n = M × V. For instance, if you have 0.2 L (200 mL) of a 0.5 M solution, the amount of dissolved solute is 0.5 mol/L × 0.2 L = 0.1 mol (or 100 mmol).

When starting with a weighed solid solute, combine the mole formula (n = m / Mr) with the molarity equation to get M = m / (Mr × V). Convert the solute mass (m) to grams, divide by the compound's molar mass (Mr in g/mol) to obtain moles, and divide that result by the final solution volume (V) in liters.

Dilution calculations use the equation M₁ × V₁ = M₂ × V₂, which states that the moles of solute taken from the stock solution (M₁V₁) equal the moles of solute present in the final diluted solution (M₂V₂). To find any single unknown variable, rearrange the formula—for example, to find the required volume of stock solution, calculate V₁ = (M₂ × V₂) / M₁.

Each symbol represents a metric scale of molar concentration: M (molar) is the base unit equal to 1 mol/L. mM (millimolar) is $10^{-3}\text{ M}$ (1 M = 1,000 mM). µM (micromolar) is $10^{-6}\text{ M}$ (1 M = 1,000,000 µM). nM (nanomolar) is $10^{-9}\text{ M}$ (1 M = 1,000,000,000 nM). Subunits like mM, µM, and nM are widely used in biochemistry, pharmacology, and molecular biology where solute concentrations are very low.

Dissolving a solid or mixing two liquids changes the total volume due to solute displacement and intermolecular interactions. Therefore, preparing a precise molar solution requires dissolving the solute in a partial volume of solvent first, and then adding solvent up to the calibration mark of a volumetric flask to reach the exact final volume V.
