Mathematical Formulas Used

1. Cross-Sectional Area (A)
Rectangular: A = b × h
Square: A = a²
Circular: A = π × d² / 4

2. Minimum Moment of Inertia (I_min)
Rectangular: I_x = (b × h³) / 12, I_y = (h × b³) / 12. I_min = min(I_x, I_y)
Circular: I = (π × d⁴) / 64

3. Effective Length (Le)
Le = K × L (where K is the effective length factor based on end supports)

4. Euler Critical Buckling Load (P_cr)
P_cr = (π² × E × I_min) / Le²

5. Material Yield Capacity (P_mat)
P_mat = f × A (where f is compressive strength/stress limit)

6. Allowable Governing Capacity
P_allow = min(P_mat / FS, P_cr / FS)

Assumptions & Limitations
  • Load is applied perfectly axially without any eccentricity (no bending moment).
  • The material is assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic, and linearly elastic.
  • Euler buckling assumes long, slender columns. Intermediate or short inelastic buckling effects (like tangent modulus) are not evaluated here.
  • Local buckling of thin-walled cross-sections is not checked.
  • For concrete, reinforcement steel contribution and specific code reduction factors (Phi factors) are not applied.
  • Self-weight of the column is ignored in the applied load input unless manually added by the user.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the Safety Factor (FS)?
It is a ratio used to divide the theoretical failure load to obtain a safe working limit. A common factor is 1.5 to 3.0 depending on the material, application, and building codes.

Why does Utilization Ratio show green when under 80%?
This is an educational visual indicator. 80% indicates you are approaching the limit of this simplified calculation. However, safety depends strictly on actual engineering standards.

What does "Combined Governing Capacity" mean?
A column can fail by being squashed (exceeding material strength) or by bending out of shape (buckling). The calculator checks both and tells you which failure happens first at a lower load.
