Water Tank Volume Formula
The calculator uses standard geometric formulas to determine tank capacity based on internal dimensions.
1. Rectangular Tank
Total Volume (V) = Length (L) × Width (W) × Height (H)Water Volume = L × W × Water Level (h)
Example: For a tank 2m long, 1m wide, and 1.5m high, filled to 1m:
Total = 2 × 1 × 1.5 = 3 m³ (3,000 Liters).
Water = 2 × 1 × 1 = 2 m³ (2,000 Liters). Fill Percentage = (1 / 1.5) × 100 = 66.67%.
2. Vertical Cylindrical Tank
Total Volume (V) = π × r² × Height (H)Water Volume = π × r² × Water Level (h)Where r = Diameter / 2
Example: For a vertical tank with 2m diameter and 3m height, filled to 1.5m:
Radius (r) = 1m. Total = π × 1² × 3 ≈ 9.42 m³.
Water = π × 1² × 1.5 ≈ 4.71 m³ (50% full).
3. Horizontal Cylindrical Tank
A partially filled horizontal cylinder requires calculating the area of the circular segment formed by the water depth, then multiplying by length.
Area (A) = r² × arccos((r - h) / r) - (r - h) × √(2rh - h²)Water Volume = A × Length (L)
Example: For a horizontal tank with 2m diameter and 3m length. If empty (h=0), V=0. If half full (h=1m), it holds exactly 50% of the total capacity. If full (h=2m), it holds the maximum capacity.
Note: Calculations assume ideal geometric shapes. Actual capacity may vary due to wall thickness and design variations.
